Growing Guide: How to Grow Papaver (Oriental Poppy)

Papaver, also known as Oriental Poppies, exhibit remarkable resilience, enduring winter temperatures as low as -20°C. This makes them well-suited for direct outdoor planting in pots or borders during both spring and autumn. For optimal results, it is essential to plant Papaver bare roots promptly upon receipt, preferably within a few days of delivery.

How to Plant:

  • Before planting, soak the roots in water for 3-6 hours.
  • In spring, you can either directly plant the bare roots into well-maintained borders or use temporary pots for outdoor growth, later transplanting them.
  • Ensure the roots are fully submerged, with the crown or buds just below the surface and any top growth exposed.
  • Select a location in borders or containers that receives either full sun or partial shade. If using containers, opt for multipurpose or soil-based compost.
  • Space the plants approximately 20-30cm apart.
  • Water the newly planted poppies thoroughly and keep them hydrated throughout their growth period.
  • After flowering, trim the stems, but leave the foliage at the base intact.
